Beyond What You Know: Five Lessons on Leadership and Career Growth from Dr. Niyi Adesanya

What does it take to become an effective leader and build a career that creates lasting impact? Is professional success determined by what you know, how well you apply your skills, or the people you connect with along the way?
These questions shaped the latest edition of the Meet the Leader (MTL) Series, hosted by the Global Shapers Community Lagos Hub, featuring Dr. Niyi Adesanya, CEO of FifthGear Plus Consulting, leadership strategist, business coach and performance consultant.
With over two decades of experience advising CEOs, business leaders and organisations across different sectors, Dr Adesanya brought practical perspectives on leadership, personal development, professional relationships and the factors that influence individual and organisational performance.
The conversation challenged participants to look beyond qualifications and technical competence, highlighting the importance of how knowledge is communicated, relationships are nurtured and opportunities are approached.

Five Lessons from the Conversation
1. Success is more than what you know.
Dr Adesanya shared a success formula:
Success = (What you know + How you express what you know) × (Who you know and who knows you).
The lesson is that knowledge alone is insufficient. Its value is amplified by the ability to communicate it effectively, demonstrate creativity and express ideas with confidence, while building meaningful professional relationships.
2. Your skills may create the connection, but your social skills open the doors.
Technical competence and talent can get you noticed, but how you relate with people influences the opportunities and relationships that follow. Dr. Adesanya introduced the concept of an Emotional Bank Account (EBA), emphasising the importance of building and maintaining positive professional relationships through trust, mutual respect and consistent interactions.
3. Develop depth without losing breadth.
Young professionals should aim to know everything about something and something about everything. Developing deep expertise in a particular field helps establish professional value, while maintaining awareness of other disciplines makes it easier to engage, collaborate and contribute across different professional spaces.
4. Learn to communicate the value of your knowledge.
Knowing something and being able to make others understand its value are two different things. Communication, creativity and confidence determine how effectively knowledge is expressed, shared and translated into influence.
5. Serve before you seek the spotlight.
Dr Adesanya encouraged young professionals to put themselves in positions where they can serve and learn from people already in leadership. Beyond gaining technical experience, this provides opportunities to develop relational abilities, understand leadership responsibilities and learn from practical exposure.

Creating Spaces for Leadership and Learning
The Meet the Leader Series is an initiative of the Global Shapers Community, under the World Economic Forum, which creates opportunities for young people to engage directly with leaders, exchange ideas, ask questions and gain perspectives that inform their personal and professional journeys.
For Global Shapers Lagos, the series complements the Hub’s work in advancing youth-led initiatives and sustainable community impact by investing in the development of young people as leaders, professionals and active contributors to society.
We appreciate Dr Niyi Adesanya for sharing his experiences and insights with our community and for challenging participants to think more intentionally about the knowledge they build, the relationships they nurture and the value they bring to their professional spaces. Becoming a leader is not just about what you have learnt or achieved; it is also about how you communicate, relate with others and use what you know to create value.
