Lagos Shapers Community Leads Successful Eko Cleanup Project at Idumota Market
The Lagos Shapers Community successfully conducted the Eko Cleanup Project at Idumota Market. This significant environmental initiative saw volunteers mobilize to clean up key areas of the busy market, reflecting a strong commitment to protecting the planet through meaningful youth engagement.
In the weeks leading up to the event, the Lagos Shapers Community conducted a public survey to identify the market in Lagos most in need of a cleanup. An overwhelming 80% of respondents selected Idumota Market. Following the survey, the community worked closely with key stakeholders within the market, including [list stakeholders], to ensure smooth cooperation and coordination on the day of the event.
Held on June 20, 2024, the event brought together young people from across Lagos who worked tirelessly to remove waste, clear debris, and raise awareness about the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment. The sanitation materials used during the project were generously donated to the market community afterwards.
The Eko Cleanup Project is part of a broader effort by the Lagos Shapers Community to protect the planet and drive youth-led change in Lagos State. This initiative is one of the impact pillars of the Global Shapers Community, with other pillars focusing on delivering basic needs to the less privileged, enhancing civic participation among residents, amongst others. The cleanup not only improved the immediate surroundings of Idumota Market but also highlighted the collective power of youth in addressing local community challenges.
The Lagos Shapers Community extends its heartfelt gratitude to all the partners and volunteers who contributed to the success of the Eko Cleanup Project.
“The success of today’s cleanup at Idumota Market is a testament to the power of commitment and collaboration by young people in driving positive change,” said Muyiwa Babarinde, Curator of the Global Shapers Community in Lagos. “It has made a lasting impact on the community, setting a positive example for future initiatives.”
