Lagos Shapers Community Marks World Blood and Sickle Cell Day with Blood Donation Drive for Sickle Cell Patients
In a remarkable display of community spirit and solidarity, members of the Lagos Shapers Community, in collaboration with Nurse Jaypee, the Livewire Project, and the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service, successfully mobilized a free blood donation drive today. This event was held in commemoration of World Blood and Sickle Cell Day, aiming to raise awareness and support for those affected by sickle cell disease.
The blood donation drive saw a significant turnout of volunteers and donors from across Lagos who came together to contribute to the cause. The project not only provided a platform for blood donation but also included educational sessions about the importance of genotype tests, blood donation and the impact of sickle cell disease, which affects millions of people worldwide.
“We have a shortage of blood across several hospitals in Lagos State and we strongly encourage everyone to donate blood from time to time.” said Muyiwa Babarinde, Curator for the Lagos Shapers Community. “There are other blood donation drives being organized across the state; and many government approved donation centers where people could walk into. Every pint of blood donated goes a long way in saving lives and supporting individuals living with sickle cell disease.”
The Lagos Shapers Community, Nurse Jaypee and the Livewire Project played crucial roles in mobilizing volunteers and ensuring the smooth execution of the drive while the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service ensured that all donations were collected safely and efficiently, adhering to the highest standards of medical practice.
The Blood Donation Drive is part of a broader effort by the Lagos Shapers Community to improve good health and well-being in Lagos State. This initiative is one of the impact pillars of the Global Shapers Community, with other pillars focusing on protecting the planet, enhancing civic participation among residents, amongst others.
The success of the event underscores the power of community collaboration in addressing public health challenges and fostering a culture of giving. The Lagos Shapers Community looks forward to continuing this important work and encourages everyone to consider regular blood donation as a vital contribution to saving lives.
